Boko Haram insurgents have overrun Northern Nigeria’s riot police training academy in Liman Kara, Borno state.
According to a witness in Borno who spoke to BBC, shots were heard
after the militants arrived in three armoured vehicles and on dozens of
motorcycles.
A resident of Liman Kara said police recruits were seen running from
the college after the attack began at dawn on Wednesday, August 20,
adding that he and other residents fled to nearby hills.
Confirming the attack, a senior security source said it had not been possible to communicate with the academy since Wednesday.
Another security official who pleaded anonymity disclosed that the
militants had entered the school but said he could not confirm they were
in control of the college as it had not been possible to contact it.
The Liman Kara college is about 15km from Gwoza, which was recently
seized by BokoHaram who allegedly killed about a 100 people and have
been controlling the town as attempts by security agents to reclaim the
town have failed.
Thousands including security operatives have been killed across
Nigeria, and many rendered homeless especially in the north-eastern
region since Boko Haram launched its violent attacks in 2009.
Members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect had reportedly seized the town of Buni Yadi town, in Yobe State, on August 20.
