This gospel music sensation has sensationally revealed how she kept and
guarded jealously her virginity till the night of her marriage.
In
a no-holds-bare interview with The Entertainer, Monique, who is married
to secular musician, Rasque, boasted that her morality is
unquestionable, and the moral ground on which she stands cannot sink.
Below is how she captured the experience and other issues:
“To
many ladies and men out there this disclosure may mean nothing. To such
people it is no big deal. But no matter anyone’s stand or view, it is
very important to me.
It has helped me to stand my ground and
look into faces of moral intimidators and tell them boldly that I am a
daughter of the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords. It is a pride for my
family and a big plus for my husband. A high moral life is essential for
continuous success. Yes, I was a virgin till the very night of my
marriage.”
Childhood
Monique is a name given to
me by my grandmother who is based in France. I am from Ishaga in Lagos
State. My father, Engineer Simeon Adebisi Fabiyi is the Osi Oba of
Ishagaland. My mother is into business. I came from a family of nine
children, six boys and three girls. I am the last of the “happy crowd”.
My family is closely united and we grew up as one, treating each other
with care, love and great concern.
My seniors were all good to me
not because I was the kid in the family but also because they too were
naturally brought up to love and respect people, status not
withstanding. We were brought up with modesty in taste; we were made to
appreciate little things and to value all things. Morality in words,
deeds and association was paramount in my upbringing. My parents never
opened the door of modernity that negated God and His ways for us. I am
proud of this background. I thank my parents for this and my brothers
for making me, their kid sister, to stay on line. Yes, they were my
disciplinarians, hands of love, care, and my teachers in subjects of
life.
Education
I attended St. Kisito Primary
School, Iju where I used to lead the school in songs during the morning
assembly. I left for Iju Grammar School where I continued singing both
at morning assembly and in the school choir. This afforded me the
opportunity to meet many groups from other schools at one competition or
the other. It was at such competitions that I met members of Midnight
Crew. Today we are closely knitted. They play a major role in my music
career. Bouqui, the gospel rapper, is also another great friend of mine.
We met years ago and I thank God that the relationship continues to be
fruitful.
First love
As earlier said, my family is
such that anything ungodly is never allowed. Our freedom was limited by
the word of God and positive traditional values. I remember when I was
in secondary school; a male friend of mine who was unable to confront
another female friend dropped the letter he wrote to her into my bag
with the instruction that I should help him deliver the letter.
Unfortunately,
I forgot to deliver the letter. When I got home, my brother searched
through my school bag and found the letter. He thought it was meant for
me, and all hell broke loose. He beat me for close to two hours before
my mother rescued me. The message sank in me that in the family no one
was allowed to misbehave. Because of this, I had no boyfriend throughout
my secondary school days and even in tertiary institution. This is why I
don’t have stories of heartbreaks, disappointments, double dating and
all sorts that most ladies tell about love. The first love in my life is
my husband. He is my friend, my lover and husband.
Courtship and marriage
People
used to see us together going out and coming in. This was the time I
was getting serious with music. As an established artiste, my husband
was helping me in the studio to put my songs together. It was this that
led to our closeness. And when my brothers noticed this, they threatened
to deal with him. I was surprised the day he came to our house and
pleaded with my brothers. He boldly told them that whatever the case, he
planned to take me to the altar. This was a surprise to everyone.
Eventually, he had his way. The courtship was allowed and the marriage
took place in 2005. Since then, I have formally changed my name to Mrs.
Temitope Monique Lawal. We are blessed with two beautiful children,
Eyimofe, a girl and Jamal, a boy.
Music talent
All
my school days, I saw my involvement in music as just a show of interest
and talent. This took me out of Lagos State University where I was
forced to withdrawal due to engagement upon engagement that took my days
and nights. It was one of my friendly lecturers who advised me to drop
one for the other or I would fail in both. I dropped out of school and
faced music squarely. But because of my thirst for higher education, I
again enrolled at Yaba College of Technology where I eventually
graduated in Business Administration.
And together with a
certificate in Computer Science, I got a job in Guaranty Trust Bank
(GTB). Interestingly, what happened to me at Lagos State University
surfaced again while at GTB. It happened that I couldn’t concentrate
much on banking because of concert engagements. Many ministries,
organizations and churches were inviting me to feature in their concerts
or programmes. This led to many financial loses that eventually forced
me out of banking. Once again, I found myself at a crossroad.
Choir bickering
Istarted
music as early as six years old as a leading choir member at Christ
Miracle Church. I left for Abundant Life Church. This was between 1997
and 2000. It was here that I stopped going to church because there were
always bickering and distrust among the choristers. I was one of the
three people leading praise worship. Because of this, those I met there
felt like ‘who is this lady that came from nowhere but suddenly became
prominent?’ It got so bad that I threw in the towel. I lost passion for
going to church and then concentrated on shows and concerts. It was in
one of such concerts organized by Pastor Paul Adefarasin of House on the
Rock that I got more recognized. I also took part in Circle of Stars
competition where I emerged the overall winner. This was in 1999.
Music ministry
It
took me sometime before I could find my way back into church. I joined
the Redeemed Christian Church of God, His Presence Assembly. Initially, I
was not regular but I sat up when I discovered that the congregation
was unlike others and the pastor-in-charge urged me to take music more
seriously. It was in this process that I discovered that music is the
ministry given to me by God.
Music and deliverance
Anytime we
had a special programme in the church like deliverance or healing,
people used to fall down whenever I sang. Even this happens during
Sunday services; I couldn’t believe it. Now, I have resigned myself to
life in the music ministry, totally submitted myself to the leading of
the Holy Spirit. I got born again in 1994 and rededicated myself to
Christ in 2006.
Albums
I released my first album
entitled, New Story in 2009. It has just four songs. I released Atobi Ju
(The Almighty) in 2011. I did a re-mix of Oba-Gbogbo Aye (King of the
Universe) early this year. Before now, I relied much on songs from other
artistes. Despite this, my audience would tell me that I sing the song
better than the original. Sometimes, I sing few of my songs also. When I
became dedicated to Christ, things changed. I now compose my lyrics and
write songs as if I was born with them. Songs come to me in very
unusual manners and places. This is why I carry a writing pad about
because inspiration could come anywhere. I have written songs for other
musicians also.
My husband, Rasque
Life would have
been different if not that I am married to my best friend. Only few
husbands will allow their wives to sleep while they cook in the kitchen,
only to wake her up to come and eat. My husband takes care of the
children more than I do. He drives me to shows and concerts. He has been
very wonderful. My husband too is a musician, he is known as Rasque and
the brain behind such secular hits as Soji (Awake) and Ati Ready (We
Are Ready). Both are successful albums.
Future plans
I
am set to release more inspiring albums, shoot good videos to trumpet
the gospel and continue to be part of the body of Christ forever.

I don’t believe in God —Seun Kuti
Oluseun Anikulapo-Kuti is the youngest son of the legendary Afrobeat
pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuit. Seun leads his father’s band, the ‘Egypt
80’ to date. In this interview with Bayo Adeoye, he speaks on his music
and lifestyle, amongst other issues
You were 14 when Fela died, what do you miss most about him?
Well, Fela was my father. You know, it’s a long time now since he died. The most important thing to me now is his presence. I miss him being around. I think of what would happen if I were able to have a discussion with him today. Knowing everything I know now, those are the kind of things you miss. I just miss him being around.
Can you describe what God means to you?
I do not believe in God. I am not a believer of anything supernatural. I don’t believe in God, Jesus Christ, Mohammed, Ifa, Ogun, or whatever anybody uses as a reason to explain simple actions of nature. God, to me, is in existence.
What has been your most embarrassing moment?
Ha (smiles)! My most embarrassing moment happened when I was nine. And nothing up till now has topped that. You know, I used to open the show for my father and I used to sing before he comes on stage. We were in Cincinnati and Fela was about to come on stage, and I had gone up somewhere because we played in this huge dome where there was an archaic session.
I was playing archaic, and I forgot about the show. I got carried away. And when it was five minutes to go… rushing back to the stage, I dressed up quickly. So, my sister helped me with my pants, I was wearing all this traditional pants that you will have to tie. So, I was like, Mosun, you did not tie it. And as soon as I got on stage, my pants just got down…
What is the amusing fact about your life that people will be surprised to know?
Well, I think I tried to keep everything as open as possible. But maybe, people would not know that if I had the opportunity, if it wasn’t for music, I would have been playing football. Not the American football, I mean real soccer.
What major goal do you hope to achieve in the next 20 years?
I do not plan that long. It is impossible for anybody to have that great plan. Looking at 20 years in a globalised world, anything can happen beyond your control. So, I think the way to deal with globalized world is to have concrete short- term plan.
Which is your favourite Fela’s song and why?
I like two: Look and Laugh and Original Suffer Head. You know, it’s just the dynamics of the music. I think in Look and Laugh, Fela actually put the definition of arrangement and melody together.
What is it like heading Fela’s ‘Egypt 80’ band?
For me, it’s very easy. The band is a very experienced band. It’s not as if they are novice, and they helped me as well. The veterans in the band make it a tradition to train the young ones and let them to be acquainted to the music. We are large in number, which makes it quite expensive to manage. But in terms of organisation and discipline, we are good.
Do you smoke?
Yes, I do. But I don’t smoke cigarette... I don’t believe any human being has the right to tell nature what to do. Nature believes in the usefulness of marijuana. And I think mankind is pompous. You don’t say earthquake or Tsunami is illegal. So, why should marijuana, an equally natural thing, be illegal, even when earthquakes and Tsunami are killing people.
When are you hoping on getting married?
I don’t believe in the title of ‘Mister’. The word itself is ‘Miss Your Star’. It doesn’t relate well with me. People forget to understand that the term ‘mister’ is an English term for an English gentleman, and I do not see myself as an English gentleman. When it happens, it happens.
You spent sometime in the Western world, what do you think about the African culture and tradition?
African culture and tradition are quickly getting extinct. Our society does not encourage us to embrace our culture. All cultures are centered on religion. So, the propaganda that African religion is only used for evil purposes while the Western religion is used for good purposes has totally destroyed our society.

Uche Elendu Publicly Lambasts Tonto, Oge Okoye, Iyabo Ojo; Says 'You're Not Classy'
Uche Elendu is an actress that is hot and sexy. For some time now, not
much has been heard about her. Sources close to the light skinned
actress told Nigeriafilms.com that Uche has been busy on some movie locations within Enugu, Asaba and Owerri axis.
Getting into news now, Uche lashed out at her colleagues in the play-acting profession. The likes of Tonto Dikeh, Oge Okoye, Anita Joseph, Lizzy Anjorin, Iyabo Ojo, Ayo Adesanya and some others have one thing in common which is one tattoo or the other on their skins.
For Uche, she thinks girls who tattoo their bodies are classless. Uche took to twitter to lambast ladies, including Nollywood actresses, who go for tattoos. She tweeted, "classy girls don't have tattoos. Reason is no one will intentionally scratch a Bentley, a Range [Rover] Sport or a private jet."
Hmm, was she wrong to have tweeted that? Hope Uche is not trying to get back at someone? Let's wait and see what comes out of this one.

Picture: Tonto Dikeh Poses Uncl*thed
Controversial actress, Tonto Dikeh has done it again this time by getting herself on the news headlines. The Ikwere, Rivers State-born actress and singer recently posed unclad and used the picture as her Blackberry display picture (DP).
Tonto, at about this time in 2011, was already in the news after she had the controversial huge tattoo on her back (as seen in the above picture). The tattoo raised a lot of dust as it hits various front pages of many magazines and newspapers with the various online news sites not left out of it.
Tonto recently tried her hands in music, which also came under criticism. Last week Sunday, she failed to show up at an event she was supposed to make her first performance as a singer.
NOLLYWOOD IS STAGNANT-Nobert Young
The thespian who is also a participant in the movie industry, Nobert
Young has described the nation’s entertainment industry known as
Nollywood to be amateurish and stagnant. “Nollywood has literally shot
itself in the foot and it is not going anywhere anymore,’’ Young
asserted.
The veteran actor made it clear that the perceived multimillion dollar movie industry which is ranked as the third larger producer of movies in the world, must embark on rigorous training of all the skills used in the production of its stories.
“Nollywood is how not to act because it is just beauty that the actors are portraying instead of the ability to be real when acting. They destroy the story by acting only on their beauty” he added.
When asked how come the financial success of Nollywood is still growing despite his alleged lack of professional in the industry, the former Checkmate star who now does more of stage productions than movies stated that “mediocrity is what sells in Nigeria. It is not the first time that people are buying what they don’t need, what sells in Nigeria’’ he alluded.
Suggesting on the way forward, the actor noted that there are diverse guilds in the movie industry. He urged leaders of the guilds to establish training centres for their professions.
Mr Young further declared that he has done enough of talking and was now ready to take some actions to rescue his beloved profession, thereby establishing a ‘Centre for Media Development and Acting Academy’ in Lagos where aspiring actors can come and learn the ropes of being the best in the profession.
Reacting to the rumour that theatre is dead in Nigeria, “theatre can never die” though he admitted that there have being a lull in the level of stage productions but there is a gradual surge in recent times. He also admitted that low publicity might also be responsible for the declining popularity of stage productions which he claims go on every week across some major cities in the country.

Naeto C Reacts To Fraud Allegation… Claims His Signature Was Forged
Hip-Hop maestro, Naeto C, has reacted to news reports making the rounds bothering on allegations of fraud levelled against him by one Muhammad Nura, of Fine Boy Swag (FBS)
In a statement made available by his publicist, Naeto C set ‘to clear the air and set the records straight’ even as he claimed his signature was forged. The statement reads in part:
With reference to the news making the rounds on entertainment blog portals and social media platforms about our client Naeto C defrauding a show promoter of certain amount of money, we would like to clear the air and set the records straight.
Naeto C actually made the trip to Abuja to fulfill his end of the agreement subject to receiving full payment for the said event which was supposed to be a day before or on the date of the engagement.
When it became apparent on the day of the show that the promoters were not forthcoming with paying up the balance, our client declined to grace the show with his presence especially as he had held up his end of the bargain regardless of the show being 3 days to his wedding.
Most significantly, the signature on the agreement document is not that of our client and this act of forgery is not only distasteful, but criminal.
The sum deposited is a fraction of the total amount which was agreed upon and stated in the agreement document as payment for his services.
Naeto C as a brand is of the premium stock. His life is well documented in the public’s eye from his family background to his upbringing, educational background, and his career as a musical artiste.
Every established show promoter knows it costs considerably more than the figure in question to book
Naeto C for a performance.
That said, we will explore all options made available to us within legal bounds of the constitution of Nigeria, including suing for fraudulent practices (forgery of signature) and defamation of character if we deem it fit, if these false claims and accusations are not retracted and a letter of apology issued

N1.305b not enough for refreshments, meals, Presidential Villa tells Senate
ABUJA —THE Senate was, yesterday, told that the N1, 305, 292, 050 set
aside in the 2013 budget for refreshment and meals and other
miscellaneous expenses in the State House will not be enough.
This is just as a breakdown of the Miscellaneous sub-head in Aso Rock’s budget shows that N203,752,432 was allocated for refreshment and meals; N107,412,768 would be spent on honorarium and sitting allowance while N37, 277,825 will be for publicity and advertisement.
These were disclosed, yesterday, when the State House Permanent Secretary, Emmanuel Ogbile appeared before the Senator Dahiru Kuta-led Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs to defend the N14,715,566,104 budget for next year.
Ogbile also told the senators some other expenses that were being taken care of in the refreshment and meals vote, which he said include National Economic Council (NEC), Council of State, conferences in the Banquet Hall, Presidential retreats, National Merit Award, Children’s Day as well as hosting of dignitaries. Chairman of the Committee, Senator Dahiru Awaisu Kuta, however, countered the Permanent Secretary on the provision for the Merit Award which he said has its own budget.
The Permanent Secretary also gave a further breakdown of the 2013 State House budget as thus, Medical expenses (N50,308,546); Postage and courier services (N10,035,583); Welfare packages (N195,066,223); Subscription to professional bodies (N4,589,793); and Sporting activities (N32,910,730).

According to Ogbile: “I have taken pains to explain that this money is not just to fund the residence of the President and that of the Vice President. The experience I have had is that this fund is grossly insufficient. It is not even enough.”
The Permanent Secretary noted that “it is also from the budget of N1.305 billion that we take care of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) which holds every Wednesday.”

Thomas Beatie is keen to have more children with his new girlfriend, however, he has said he does not know which of them would carry the next baby.
Beatie, 38, stoked huge controversy four years ago when he became known in media outlets as the "Pregnant Man" and gave birth when he was still with his ex-wife Nancy Beatie, who was unable to conceive.Three children later their marriage fell apart and they split, with Beatie going on to begin dating their daycare director, Amber Nichols. He now insists that he wants more children, but has not decided who would carry the baby yet.
"Hypothetically we have talked about starting a family together," the "Pregnant Man" said to Anderson Cooper recently.
"Yes, the surgeon highly advises against it, yeah, I might bust a stitch or something," he added.
Beatie has been a transgender now for 15 years, but has only just recently had his full sex change operation earlier this year. Despite the extent of the operations he has decided to keep his womb to allow the option to carry a child.
Amber also has said that she would like a child of her own, but insists "Not today, in the future."
Beatie has said, "We would have to check out our fertility options. Right now we have some of the same sperm used with the three children that I've had. We have two vials left at California Bank and there's a clinic in San Francisco that we might seek advice from."
Beatie also spoke to Anderson Cooper about his split from his wife, Nancy: "It's been a process. We physically separated back in March when I filed for separation and there was a protective order but basically I didn't wear my wedding ring for a year prior to that."
Beatie has maintained sole custody of their children for now but the ex-couple share parenting time between them.
Recently an Arizona judge disputed the fact that Beatie was legally a man, potentially making things even more complicated for him. But Beatie has said he would fight so that his marriage would not be nullified.
"It did happen and I was married to Nancy for almost 10 years, we paid taxes, we bought and sold homes, we started a family together and I want that to be validated."

Ini Edo speaks on divorce, N600m largesse
Ini Edo speaks on divorce, N600m largesse
Top Nollywood actress, Ini
Edo-Ehiagwina, is currently enmeshed in controversies about her marriage
and an alleged largesse from the Akwa Ibom State governor Godswill
Akpabio.
Not mincing words and obviously angry, the actress spat fire at those paddling untrue stories about her.
She said, “As a rule, I don’t reply
every talk or report about me, but these recent ones are crazy and
baseless. I don’t know where they got their information that my state
governor offered me N600m to build an art or film academy in Uyo.
“This is just another work of mischief
makers, who keep troubling celebrities. To put the records straight, my
state governor has not offered me such money to build a film academy in
Uyo (the Akwa Ibom State capital), as was falsely reported.
“As for the other wicked rumours that
I’ve been divorced by my United States–based husband, Phillip Ehiagwina,
that is just another lie that can only come from professional happy
home breakers. No fight or separation ever happened. We are still

NLC warns Jonathan against fuel price hike
The Nigeria Labour Congress has warned
the Federal Government against any surreptitious move to increase the
price of petroleum products in the country.
NLC President, Mr. Abdulwahed Omar,
warned in a statement on Friday that any increase in the price of fuel
would lead to a crisis as the congress would call out Nigerians to
resist it.
Omar called on President Goodluck
Jonathan to focus government attention on the need to frontally tackle
the corruption that had held the nation’s oil sector hostage.
He urged the President to ensure the
prosecution of those indicted for subsidy fraud and the diversion of
N1.7tn funds meant for the industry, rather than venturing into a total
removal of petroleum subsidy, which he said would not be resisted.
He faulted the President’s claim that
local refining of petroleum products could only be effectively carried
out by private sector operators, stressing that the nation’s refineries
were effectively managed until they came under a regime of corruption
foisted on them by corrupt government officials.
He warned that any increase in the
prices of petroleum products would culminate in a crisis that would
surpass the last January anti-fuel price hike demonstration.
“The statement by the President claiming
that only the removal of fuel subsidy will allow for domestic refining
of fuel is highly disturbing. More so, coming at this time of the year,
when many see the current fuel scarcity being experienced in most parts
of the country as being artificially created,” Omar said.
“With the wave of revelations regarding
monumental corruption in the petroleum industry it will be unimaginable
to contemplate any other thing than focusing on ridding the industry of
the endemic corruption that has become so pervasive in the industry,”
Omar added.
Committee to Protect Journalists : Turkey is ‘World’s Leading Jailer Of Journalists’, while Erdogan continue to sue journalists
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has condemned Turkey for being disgracingly ‘the world’s leading jailer of journalists.’ Turkey is marked with this shame, yet Turkish PM Erdogan continues to sue journalist for ‘insulting’ HIM.
Istanbul / NationalTurk – In a report issued on October 22, the New York-based Journalism rights group CPJ stated 76 Turkish journalists were in Turkish prisons as of August 1, adding that 61 of them seemed to be jailed as a direct result of their work. The report notes the cases of the remaining 15 journalists are still being investigated by CPJ workers.
The report also adds that 70 % of those journalists were of Turks with Kurdish origins.
Meanwhile, lawsuits opened on behalf of the Turkish prime minister against people who have “insulted” HIM in the Turkish media and have thus created a strong deterrent factor preventing other reporters from deploying similar rhetoric, according to a lawyer for the Turkish leader.
The CPJ report says 30 % of imprisoned journalists were accused of participating in plots against the Turkish government or membership in outlawed organizations such as PKK terrorists.
The report also claims that three-quarters of jailed journalists have not yet been convicted of any crime but are held while they await “resolution of their cases.”
According to the CPJ, the charges against these journalists often originate from the journalists speaking with “security officials or obtaining documents.”
CPJ executive director Joel Simon said, “Turkey’s tendency to equate critical journalism with terrorism is not justified by the country’s security concerns.”
The report cites Turkish media-freedom groups as reporting at the end of 2011 that there were some 5,000 criminal cases pending against journalists.
It also criticizes Turkish authorities for a 2007 Internet law that allows ad hoc filtering, which CPJ says is particularly noticeable against opposition and Kurdish websites.
Turkish PM Tayyip Erdogan cases against journalists stanching criticism, his lawyer’s words
“We have to underline that cases we’ve opened against press have been quite a deterrent; the wording of columnists has noticeably changed especially since the year 2003. Reporters and columnists do not exceed the dose when making criticisms anymore; insulting comments or columns have been reduced to minimum,” Ali Özkaya, a lawyer for Prime Minister Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan, was quoted as saying by daily AkÅŸam today. The lawyer states they mostly sued Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal KılıçdaroÄŸlu and that they had won the most compensation from cases involving the main opposition head.
Turkish Youth insults Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Twitter, Facebook … everywhere
Özkaya also warned Turkish youth about use of social media. “Young people are using social media as if they’re talking to a friend and they insult the prime minister and other ministers. They think nobody sees their messages, but social media is a public area. According to the law, cases are automatically being opened against these [people] even if the prime minister doesn’t make a complaint,’ he explains. The CPJ recommends that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan “should cease his attacks on the press and instead provide justice for journalists while pursuing reforms that guarantee freedom of expression.”
The CPJ’s Simon said, “As a rising regional and global power, Turkey’s economic and political success should be matched by respect for the universal right to freely exchange news, information, and ideas.”
According to the CPJ, the number of journalists in Turkish jails surpasses figures in Iran, China, or Eritrea, qualifying Turkey for the title of the world’s leading jailer of journalists.

Vanessa Hudgens says she's not ready to be a mom
In the film, about four coeds who get mixed up with a drug dealer, played by Franco, Hudgens gets down and dirty with Franco and Benson in a pool.
At the Toronto Film Festival in September, Hudgens also shared her feelings with our own Marc Malkin about doing the scene.
"I've never done anything like that before. I'm very thankful that I had one of my best friends to do it with," she said, referring to Benson.
Of course, her pal Benson clearly had a different experience altogether, as she and Franco are now said to be an item!

Police harass, brutalise us on unrestricted roads – Okada riders
Police harass, brutalise us on unrestricted roads – Okada riders
Some men of the Lagos State Police Command and task force enforcing the state traffic law on okada riders in Ojodu and Berger area now employ brutal tactics to arrest riders who violate the law, findings by Shagari News Metro have shown.
Our correspondents, who went around spots that served as okada
parks in Isheri, a police van marked ‘Magodo GRA Phase II Residents
Association Security Patrol Van’ swung by a motorcyclist riding along
the road and hit him.
The rider fell into a ditch beside the road and the motorcycle fell on him.
The policemen jumped down from the van,
pointed their guns at the rider as one of them immediately took the
motorcycle and mounted it.
The rider, who sustained injuries on his
head and leg, climbed onto the police van while one of the policemen
rode the motorcycle behind.
Residents of the area said the incident was a common occurrence in the area.
Some of the riders, who spoke with our
correspondent on Thursday, also accused the state task force of
arresting and impounding motorcycles on roads that were not classified
as out of bound to okada.
A group of okada riders on
Kosoko Street, off Ogunnusi Road, Ojodu, said even though the street was
not “off limit,” the Lagos task force had on many occasions impounded
motorcycles on the street.
One of the riders, Ibrahim Adejobi, said, “After the vandalisation of a BRT bus on November 7 by some okada
riders, the task force came here with a Black Maria and confiscated
every motorcycle in sight irrespective of whether it was commercial or
private.
“Since that day, it was like they
renewed their wickedness. Any motorcycle close to the Kosoko Junction,
even if the motorcycle is not plying the Ogunnusi Road, would be
impounded.
“There was a time a motorcyclist at the
junction saw them and sped into the street. They chased and impounded
the motorcycle. They then proceeded to impound every motorcycle they saw
on Kosoko Street that day.
A store owner at Ojodu, Caroline Ugwu,
said that in the last two weeks, she had witnessed the brutality of task
force members about four times in the front of her store.
An okada rider, who identified
himself simply as Abubakar, said one of his friends sustained a serious
injury when a van used by task force officials knocked him down while
trying to impound his motorcycle.
“He sustained a burn from the motorcycle’s exhaust pipe when he was knocked down and the okada fell on his leg. They did not even care. They took the motorcycle and put it in their Black Maria and left,” he said.
Okada riders in Magodo GRA Phase II and its environs also lamented police harassment on routes that okada were not prohibited.
An okada rider, Ola Ishola, at
the Magodo Phase II gate park said the police attached to the Ogudu Area
Command had made it a daily routine to impound motorcycles in the
outlying streets in the area.
He said, “Despite the fact that we ply
Cele, Love All, Aladelola, Oluwalogbon, Dairo and Makinde streets,
which are not part of the restricted routes, policemen still come into
these places to harass us.
“These policemen usually come into these
streets with rented commercial buses and as soon as they come, they
will impound our motorcycles and whisk away the riders to their station.
“At the station, they will demand for sums between N10,000 and N20,000 while threatening to take the okada to Alausa unless their demand is met.”
Another rider in the area, Mohammed Isa,
said the constant harassment had made many of them sustained various
injuries in an attempt to evade arrest.
He said, “I wonder why people brazenly
derive pleasure in meting out degrading and inhuman treatment to fellow
human beings. For crying out loud, we are not contravening any section
of the traffic law, yet they still harass us.
“The last time they stormed our park, about three of us got injured when they started hitting us with their gun butts.
“Even while riding on the road, they
don’t bother if we are carrying passengers or not. They simply double
park their vehicle sometimes, hit us and wound our passengers. We now
live in perpetual fear despite operating lawfully on the road.”
In Isheri, residents said since the
incident of November 7, when policemen attached to the state task force
embarked on indiscriminate clamp down of okada, commercial motorcycle riders no longer operate in the area.
A resident, Segun Joshua, said, “On
November 7, those policemen even went to the extent of impounding
motorcycles parked inside residential apartments.
“Now you can hardly see an Okada
plying inner streets of Isheri, Olowora, UNILAG Estate, Gateway Estate
area and its environs. Government should really intervene and restore
normalcy.”
When contacted, the police officer in
charge of the task force, Mr. Bayo Sulaiman, said on the phone that the
day the BRT was vandalised, some okada riders who fled into different streets were the ones arrested.
Sulaiman said, “We are talking about motorcycles that have two wheels.
How do you arrest riders without them falling down especially when they are trying to evade arrest?
“This country cannot develop when people
keep opposing good things. All these reports that the task force is
being brutal are just ploys to oppose the law which we all know is a
good thing. The chairman of the riders’ association in the areas you
mentioned knows the truth.
“About the policemen from Magodo Phase II who you say knocked down the okada rider, I cannot comment on that since that was not done by our task force.”
But the Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, was not available for comment when contacted.
After calls and text messages were sent to her phone, an assistant, who answered her phone, said she was “on air.”
However, subsequent calls were not answered.
Doctors leave bullet in banker’s body, extract four
An employee of Access Bank, Femi Badejo,
who was allegedly shot alongside a security guard, Joshua Musa, by
policemen on Saturday at Ikota, Lagos, still has a bullet lodged in his
wrist.
Shagari News learnt that the bullet could not be removed at the moment.
“I’m still in pain from the bullet
wounds. I was shot five times. Four of the bullets have been removed but
the fifth one is still lodged in my wrist and because of fear of
complications, doctors can’t touch it for now,” he said.
However, Badejo has been moved from St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos Island, to an undisclosed location.
Meanwhile, Covenant University Alumni
Association has written a petition to the Inspector-General of Police,
Muhammed Abubakar, over the alleged shooting.
Badejo is an alumnus of the university and member of the association.
The Vice-President of the Abuja chapter
of the association, Mr. Reginald Bassey, berated the police for lack of
professionalism and failing to issue a public apology.
Bassey said the matter was more pathetic
because Badejo is a promising young man, a husband and a father-to-be,
who had been left incapacitated for days.
He added, “We have written a petition to
demand for three things. First, we want a thorough investigation into
the matter and we want the policemen who shot the victims to be brought
to book.
“We see it as callous that those who are paid to secure lives could storm a compound and start shooting sporadically.
“Also, we want compensation for Badejo and the compensation must be commensurate with the extent of the injury.”
Bassey expressed dismay that rather than
address the situation, the police resorted to harassing a journalist
that reported the incident.
“We want a formal apology from the Inspector-General of police addressed to Badejo,” he said.
The Coordinator of the Lagos chapter of
the association, Mr. Olufemi Fajemisin, who signed the petition,
questioned the level of training of policemen in the state due to the
incessant allegations of extra-judicial killings.
Badejo and Musa were allegedly shot by
the policemen who responded to a distress call about a robbery in the
banker’s home on Saturday at Ikota area of Lagos.
The residents of the house said when the
policemen arrived the scene about an hour after the robbers had left,
they started shooting indiscriminately resulting in injuring the banker
and security guard.
Badejo was shot five times while Musa was hit twice.
The police claimed that Badejo was shot
only once while the security guard had been shot by the armed robbers
before they arrived.
Jose Mujica: The world’s ‘poorest’ president • Donates 90% salary to poor • Shuns presidential mansion • Rides 1987 Volkswagen
• Shuns presidential mansion • Rides 1987 Volkswagen
It’s a common grumble that politicians’ lifestyles
are far removed from those of their electorate. Not so in Uruguay. Meet
the president – who lives on a ramshackle farm and gives away most of
his pay.
Laundry is strung outside the house. The water comes
from a well in a yard, overgrown with weeds. Only two police officers
and Manuela, a three-legged dog, keep watch outside.
This is the residence of the president of Uruguay,
Jose Mujica, whose lifestyle clearly differs sharply from that of most
other world leaders.
President Mujica has shunned the luxurious house that
the Uruguayan state provides for its leaders and opted to stay at his
wife’s farmhouse, off a dirt road outside the capital, Montevideo.
The president and his wife work the land themselves, growing flowers.
This austere lifestyle – and the fact that Mujica
donates about 90% of his monthly salary, equivalent to $12,000 (£7,500),
to charity – has led him to be labelled the poorest president in the
world.
“I may appear to be an eccentric old man … But this is a free choice.”
“I’ve lived like this most of my life,” he says,
sitting on an old chair in his garden, using a cushion favoured by
Manuela the dog.
“I can live well with what I have.”
His charitable donations – which benefit poor people
and small entrepreneurs – mean his salary is roughly in line with the
average Uruguayan income of $775 (£485) a month.
All the president’s wealth is a 1987 VW Beetle.
In 2010, his annual personal wealth declaration –
mandatory for officials in Uruguay – was $1,800 (£1,100), the value of
his 1987 Volkswagen Beetle.
This year, he added half of his wife’s assets – land, tractors and a house – reaching $215,000 (£135,000).
That’s still only about two-thirds of Vice-President
Danilo Astori’s declared wealth, and a third of the figure declared by
Mujica’s predecessor as president, Tabare Vasquez.
Elected in 2009, Mujica spent the 1960s and 1970s as
part of the Uruguayan guerrilla Tupamaros, a leftist armed group
inspired by the Cuban revolution.
He was shot six times and spent 14 years in jail.
Most of his detention was spent in harsh conditions and isolation, until
he was freed in 1985 when Uruguay returned to democracy.
Those years in jail, Mujica says, helped shape his outlook on life.
“I’m called ‘the poorest president’, but I don’t feel
poor. Poor people are those who only work to try to keep an expensive
lifestyle, and always want more and more,” he says.
“This is a matter of freedom. If you don’t have many
possessions then you don’t need to work all your life like a slave to
sustain them, and therefore you have more time for yourself,” he says.
“I may appear to be an eccentric old man. But this is a free choice.”
The Uruguayan leader made a similar point when he
addressed the Rio+20 summit in June this year: “We’ve been talking all
afternoon about sustainable development. To get the masses out of
poverty.
“But what are we thinking? Do we want the model of
development and consumption of the rich countries? I ask you now: what
would happen to this planet if Indians would have the same proportion of
cars per household than Germans? How much oxygen would we have left?
“Does this planet have enough resources so seven or
eight billion can have the same level of consumption and waste that
today is seen in rich societies? It is this level of hyper-consumption
that is harming our planet.”
Workers Unions Divided over Aviation Minister
Aviation workers, under aegis of the Amalgamated Union of Public
Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Service Employees
(AUPCTRE), have condemned their counterparts in the Air Transport
Service Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) and the National
Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) over the alleged use of abusive
words on the Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah.
The AUPCTRE members said the attitude of ATSSSAN and NUATE negates the
veritable trade union ethics in the “conduct of positive and mutually
rewarding industrial relations practice,” accusing the union leaders of
resorting to vilification of highly placed government official in their
quest to upturn a decision government had taken, which they claimed was
against their interest.
AUPCTRE was referring to the letter and press statement issued in a
recently in Lagos by ATSSSAN and NUATE where the executives of the two
were alleged to have attacked the person of the minister for directing
the transfer of top official of ATSSSAN and recent appointments made in
the sector.
In a letter addressed to ATSSSAN and NUATE executives and dated
November 12, 2012, by B. C. Ibeawuchi for the General Secretary, AUPCTRE
said that the two unions did not speak on behalf of all the workers in
the industry.
“In the press statement referred to above, your two organisations claimed to be acting ‘on behalf of the leadership of the unions in the aviation industry…You would agree with us that your claim is untrue, unfair and most importantly incorrect.”
“In the press statement referred to above, your two organisations claimed to be acting ‘on behalf of the leadership of the unions in the aviation industry…You would agree with us that your claim is untrue, unfair and most importantly incorrect.”
The body said that ATSSSAN and NUATE should have involved all unions in
the sector rather than taken actions on behalf of everybody, including
the workers they have alienated in their decisions and action.
“Issues raised in your press statement qualify to form the basis for
all inclusive unions/management’s deliberation at the level of the
minister. Our union and members non-involvement in your written
statement under reference notwithstanding, may we state that expressions
contained therein ‘do not represent and confirm with industrial
relations best practices and therefore may not advance the interest and
wellbeing of the employees and statutory agencies in the aviation
industry,” the body said.

About
2000 female students of Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH)
have come out to protest over alleged sexual harassment, molestation
and extortion of female students by some staff of the institution...
The
placard-carrying students blocked traffic at Eleven-Eleven Bus Stop on
their way to the Government House, in Calabar to register their
grievance. Some of the placards carried by the students had inscriptions
such as, ‘Sexual harassment of female students’, Female molestation’,
‘Extortion of money from students’, ‘No better CRUTECH, No better Cross
River’, ‘CRUTECH, no better lecture hall’, etc.
Meanwhile,
the Students Union president of the institution, Mr Ekong Eka, accused
the state government of neglecting students of the university, adding
that, two months ago, some groups of people came to the school to tell
them that government wanted to pay them bursary.
However,
the institution is yet to come out with any form of response to these
allegations leveled against its lecturers by the students. Sexual
harassment is, no doubt rampart in tertiary institutions in the country
and a lot of the victims suffer in silence. These students have indeed
taken a bold move.
