ORIGINAL PROFILE OF SUSAN OLUWABIMPE ‘GOLDIE’ HARVEY- REST IN PEACE
Growing up in a family where music was virtually the only bright spot in a tripartite existence that revolved round home, school and church, it did not come as much surprise that Susan Oluwabimpe Harvey now known as Goldie chose to be a singer, songwriter and performer.
If it was to give vent to a childhood social denial, available indices indicate that Goldie is making a resounding success of her career choice. If it was to prove to her hitherto unbending dad that her sometimes rebellious streak as a teen was just a quest for her true essence, she has equally succeeded. And everybody must indeed be very proud of this young lady because less than five years into her musical odyssey, the crown of Nigeria’s nonpareil pop diva now nestles snugly on her golden mane.
Since her emergence onto the pop culture radar a few years ago, Goldie has cut large swaths though the fields of musical accomplishments; exemplifying a special conception of musical heroine who can say or show anything while providing a view of the bold, confrontational and liberated woman. Colourful and cerebral, Goldie’s musical strength and depth, sensuality and serenity have appropriated her as the high water mark that other female singers have to live up to. Add to that mix the fact that the multiple awards-winning singer has created a smouldering, public persona that borders on the eccentric and eclectic, otherwise creative and precise, but engaging enough to keep you talking about her. Despite the mixed reactions to her musical style and outré outlook, Goldie has fitted perfectly into the role of Nigeria’s most consistent female performer of the moment.
EARLY LIFE
Indeed, in the case of talent and passion, the apple does not fall
too far away from the tree. Goldie was born In the early 80s to very
educated and successful parents – her mum, late Mrs. Olabisi Betty from
the illustrious Olaiya family in Ijebu, Ogun State was a former managing
director in a bank, while her dad, a native of Ikole-Ekiti, Ekiti
State, also retired as a director in a new generation bank. He is now
into full time clerical works in Lagos. The first of four kids, Goldie’s
education began at the Green Springs Montessori Primary School and then
St. John's College, Palm Grove, Lagos where Christian Religious
Knowledge, she said, was her favourite subject because she didn’t have
to study too hard to pass it. In fact, by the age of 10, she already
knew so many bible verses that belied her age.She recalled, “My childhood was very interesting but regimented. My Dad was a leader in church and very active too while my mum used to lead the choir. So, as their first child, I took very active roles in all church activities – drama, choir, bible classes and so on. Church was the only social life we had. On Mondays, we went for bible classes; Wednesdays were for prayer meetings and then one Friday in a month, we went for vigil. I never had toys or friends because my father thought they would lead me astray." Thus, her mum was her closest friend. However, the bond that held mother and daughter together snapped irretrievably in 1994.
LOSING HER MUM
Goldie described her mum as a woman of high intellectual and moral values. “She was the first to have a scholarship in her family. She was an avid reader and had a lot of certificates and degrees.” Every night, when every other person had gone to bed, Goldie and her mum would stay up chit-chatting and watching television. She was the only friend Goldie had. But she died too soon after a long-drawn battle with cancer, leaving behind four kids. “It was a traumatic experience for me especially because it was like losing my only friend and confidant. I cried bitterly and even up till now, over a decade later, the pain of her demise has not left me.” Goldie is however consoled that she now has another mum in her step-mother who she describes as God-sent.
FORAY INTO MUSIC
At that time too, it had become pretty obvious that Goldie was an embryonic diva. “I’d been flirting with music all my life. I don’t remember exactly how old but I was incredibly young when I knew that I’d go into some form of entertainment. Everybody who knew me back then knew that I could sing because I was always singing in school or church; I’ve always had that artistic flair.” So, when she got to the UK where she had been admitted to study Business Management at the University of Sunderland, she and a couple of friends formed an informal group which performed for friends and family. The group even did a couple of demos which never really made it out.
GOING PROFESSIONAL
Interestingly, Goldie’s return to Nigeria in the mid-2000s did not
quite signal an immediate take-off for her career. Rather, she
concentrated on building her date-reminder services business. In the
course of this, she needed to do a jingle and was introduced to Mani of
Cool FM who bowled her over with his production aplomb. They talked
about music and what they’d like to achieve. The young lady evinced
unadulterated passion and determination which prompted Mani to introduce
her to industry players. Then, she met renowned producer, OJB Jezreel
who would produce her first single, Komole. This was followed by three
other singles Spin Me, Nothing has Changed, and Shift, which all formed
part of her compilation CD. Since then, there has been no stopping her.
Through the turbulence, drudgery and seeming impervious of the music
industry, Goldie held her own, talent for talent, and creativity for
creativity. After a tentative management deal in 2009, Goldie was signed
on to Nigeria’s foremost music label, Kennis Music in 2010.A few months later, she released her debut album, Gold, which given Nigerians’ apathy towards pop music, has been a critical success. The album exudes the audacity and flamboyance of Goldie, and has spewed a couple of provocative, smart, and infectious videos; You Know It, JawoJawo and DTMB (Don’t Touch My Body) The 3 songs are now certified street anthems with increasing followership. “For me, the clothing, the props, and the creative direction must be properly coordinated because I want my fans to have very specific imagery in their head when they're listening to the music and watching the accompanying video.” Continuing, she says, “Entertainment as a whole has gone visual. The best way to sell yourself and your music is to make a video… I will say for the record though, that I love shooting music videos, that’s one of the highlights of being in my profession; I like bringing my fantasies to life. A good music video is just one of the many ways to do this.” Little wonder, the video for ‘You Know it’ won the best female video at the 2010 SoundCity Music Video Awards and also picked the award for best use of costume at the Nigerian Music Video Awards; while DTMB picked up best Afro Pop video at the 2011 Nmva’s.
TRIVIA
ACCOLADES
Goldie is an ambassador of Project Alert, a world renowned not for profit organisation aimed at advocating Zero tolerance to all forms of violence against women and young girls. This rare honour was bestowed upon her after the president of the organization saw all the charity works she had been doing on her own.
Goldie has so far in the past year nabbed a total of ten (10 awards) including Exquisite Lady of the year (ELOY) Best Female Artiste award and City People Best Female Artiste of the year... She has also been inducted as a Federal Celebrity Special Marshal alongside other notable Nigerian Celebrities. The Law Students Society of the Obafemi Awolowo University (O.A.U) recently issued her an Award for Musical Excellence under the category of Best Female Artiste of the Year. She has also been conferred a United Nations Youth Ambassador for Peace by the Federal Government.
Having won all the major awards on the African continent, headlined major events within and outside the continent, hosted sold-out tours, Goldie is not just a name but a brand that have since carved a niche for herself as a leading African Female pop Diva.
Goldie became the final celebrity to exit the BBA7 star game house in 2012 as the 3rd runner up.
The video for SAY MY NAME received BEST POP COSTUME at the Nigerian Music Video Awards (NMVA) in December 2012. She was also honoured with a SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD at Top Naija music awards same month.
Queen G is currently working on a Continental-wide musical project titled THE AFRICA INVASION ALBUM. The first 3 hits off the Naughty Singles compilation; SKIBOBO featuring AY (Tanzania), MILIKI featuring NAVIO (Uganda), and GIVE IT TO ME featuring J MARTINS (Nigeria), have all recorded massive downloads worldwide.

Nigeria MUST GO! says Ghanaian authorities
Ghanaian authorities have renewed the
siege against foreign traders, as the Ministry of Trade and Industry, at
the weekend clamped down over 40 shops belonging to Nigerians. The shops located at Akanshie, about
200 meters away from the Mokola International Market were occupied by
Nigerians, who traded in bicycle spare parts and other accessories.
According to one of the affected
traders, Mr. Damien Uduba, their shops were stormed by some officials of
the Ministry of Trade and Industry, who compelled them to pack their
goods and thereafter had the shops under lock and key. The officials
were reported to have secured the shops with their own padlocks, thereby
making them inaccessible to the owners.
Business in the usually busy area has almost grinded to a halt, as only a few shops said to be owned by Ghanaians are open.“Official of the Ministry of Trade and
Ministry of Ghana came yesterday and asked us to close and pack our
things. And afterwards, they locked up all the shops and asked us to go
out of their markets. In fact we are all troubled, we started packing
our things inside the shops, and they locked everything inside and took
the keys away,” Uduba revealed.
A written notice pasted on the doors
of the sealed shops titled “Notice to Non-Ghanaians engaging in retail
business,” instructed them to regularize their businesses before they
would be allowed to continue doing business. A ruffled Uduba insisted that he had
done all that was required by the Ghanaian law to do business in the
country, “If you see in my hands, I have all the documents, we are
obliged to obtain. This is the document from the Ghanaian government
authorizing me to commence business in the country.
“You can see another document. This is
my Resident Permit, allowing me to reside in the country. In fact I
have all the documents. I pay VAT, IRS and other taxes. I pay everything
and yet they closed my shop. They said I should move out of the market.
I should pack all my things and go back to Nigeria,” he said.
Another affected trader, Mr. Prince
Uzokwu, who also recounted his ordeal at the ministry, said he was told
that he would only be allowed into his shop to pack his goods out of the
place. He was not allowed to continue trading in the area.
Uzokwu recollected that the area was
transformed into a beehive of commerce by the Nigerian traders stating,
“When we came to this place it was virtually empty, but you know
Nigerians. I came and I brought somebody and that person brought another
and within a period of time, the place blossomed into a market.
“So if I go to the bush or a village
to establish again, maybe tomorrow, the place will also turn into a
market and they will come and expel us again. So we don’t know what to
do about it. We are losing business and we have families to fend for,”
he blustered. Uduba added that the conciliatory
moves by ECOWAS Parliament that brought them some respite may have been
disregarded by the Ghanaian authorities.
Mr. Joseph Obeng, the National
Organizer of Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) insisted that
there was nothing like concession. The laws of the country must be
implemented to the letter. In so far as their law had reserved retail
business for Ghanaians alone it must be respected.
Oteng also reasoned that Ghana cannot forgo her laws when her nationals in other ECOWAS countries were subject to domicile laws.
The President of the Nigerian Union of
Traders Association in Ghana (NUTAG), Deacon John Igwe Ukala, who
expressed surprise at the latest intimidation of Nigerian traders,
explained that he was unaware of any default on the part of their
members that could have prompted the action taken by the Ghanaian
authorities.
“I always tell our members to be law
abiding and do as the law of Ghana says. Don’t misbehave here, pay your
tax, pay your VAT, and get your Resident Permit. To my greatest
surprise, when I heard this news yesterday we were really shocked. I
cannot understand the cause of this, because I know our members have
complied with their laws,” he posited.
Ukala said the closure was targeted at
Nigerians, because other foreign nationals, especially the Lebanese
were selling in the markets without molestation, stressing, “As I am
talking to you now, when we go back to the other side of Akanshie, you
will see some whites, especially Lebanese trading.”
Ukala, who claimed that the traders
felt abandoned, because they were regularly intimidated by the Ghanaian
authorities decried the in- action of Nigerian government. He also asked
that ECOWAS should come to their rescue once again.
A source close to the Ghanaian Trade
Ministry, who preferred anonymity, explained that the country had
adopted the posture in order to compel the Nigerian government to act on
certain bureaucratic bottlenecks that were militating against their
trade relations with Nigeria.
For instance, he cited the fact that
some made in Ghana goods were prohibited by the Nigerian government, an
action that was frustrating their bid to engage in more robust business
with Nigeria.
He also made mention of the fact that
their traders were intimidated, harassed and extorted at the Nigerian
border, which has limited Ghanaian penetration into the Nigerian market.
President John Mahama, when he was
vice president regularly derided Nigeria, because of the bloated number
of security checks at the border, insisting that inter-regional trade
would not strive under such circumstances.
Commenting on the most recent closure,
the Nigerian High Commissioner to the country, Ambassador Ademola Seyi
Onafowokan, had assured the affected traders that he will confer with
the host authorities on their behalf. Therefore, he asked the traders to
be law abiding and be confident that Ghanaians in their magnanimity
would allow them to continue their business.
For those, who flagrantly disobey the
Ghanaian laws, he had no words of reprieve for them, as he insisted that
the government of Nigeria will not countenance lawlessness

2013 AfricaN Cup of nations: Zambia mock Eagles’ N1.6m-a-player largesse
THe Zambian government has put an “attractive package” on the table
for the national soccer team to take if it retains the African Cup of
Nations.
Zambia is in Group C with Burkina Faso, Ethiopia and Nigeria and the
country’s Minister of Sports and Youth Chishimba Kambwili said Nigeria’s
offer of US$100,000 each to the Super Eagles players is a sign of
panic.
Nigerian players have been promised US$100,000 (about N1.6m)) each if they win the championship slated for January 19 to February 10 in South Africa. This is the same amount the Zambian government gave the Chipolopolo players for winning the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations co-hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
“The stage has been set for our team and I can assure the nation that the players have been given good bonuses. For Nigeria, they are just playing mind games with the money strategy because they are scared,” he said.
Kambwili said the government is confident the championship will return to Zambia and the players will get the “cash bonanza”, whose value he declined to state.
He also disclosed that through the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), the players have already been told the monetary gain if they win.

School Boy Kidnappers Want N150m
Kidnappers of two-year old Nigerian boy, Emmanuel Alonge, have
demanded N150 million as ransom before the boy could be released.
Alonge was on his way to school on Monday in Lagos, southwest Nigeria, when he was kidnapped by gunmen and whisked away to an unknown destination.
P.M.NEWS gathered that the father of the boy, Olusegun Alonge, who is the proprietor of Barachel group of schools in Ifako-Ijaiye, had been contacted by the kidnappers and given 48 hours ultimatum to provide the money or risk losing his son.
A family source said the kidnappers called the father of the boy on two occasions the same day. The first time was at 4.21 pm while the second was at 11.30 pm to demand for the ransom.
The 48-hour ultimatum will expire today, but nobody knows the whereabouts and fate of the boy as at the time of filing this report.
Alonge was being taken to school in the parents’ Lexus SUV in the company of the driver (Daniel) and the private nurse (Mrs. Adeyemo) when the kidnappers who ambushed and overpowered them snatched the little boy from them at gun point.
It was gathered from eye witnesses that the kidnappers wore masks during the operation and had been in the vicinity awaiting their victim some hours before they struck.
P.M.NEWS gathered that the kidnappers were four. It was learnt that when they arrived the area, they drove and parked their black Mitsubishi Montero SUV about seven buildings away from the residence of the Alonges.
An eye witness, who craved anonymity said: “Truly, we saw the black SUV parked in the area, but we didn’t suspect any ulterior motive because the passengers were outside playing and chasing one another about, until when we saw them moving again to block the coming Lexus SUV carrying the boy to school.” Another eye witness, Kamilu Sulaimon, said that trouble began for the Alonge family when occupants of the Montero SUV pretended to be moving away from Willisco Street only to block the Lexus SUV. “The SUV refused to give way to the Lexus SUV and at the same time refused to move on. The driver of the Lexus SUV started to hoot and suddenly, the kidnappers alighted and demanded for the boy.
“We noticed that the driver refused and this made the kidnappers threaten to break the glass. Eventually, the driver opened the door when he saw guns with them. They threw the private nurse under the Lexus SUV and sped off with the child,” he explained.
The nurse (Adeyemo) explained that because she was thrown under the vehicle and that Daniel could not drive over her, it gave the assailants ample time to drive off before the chase that followed could begin.
According to her, the kidnappers hit her several times with their gun butt when she refused to release the boy, adding that “when they opened the door, they told us ‘we are not going to kill you if only you give us the boy’. I then told them that I will not release the boy until they kill me. That was when they hit me in the head and when I slumped they threw me under the vehicle.” As P.M.NEWS was about going to press, family sources told our correspondent that the kidnappers had slashed the ransom to N100 million.
Meanwhile, the mother of the little boy has been delivered of twins. It was gathered that the mother delivered the twins hours after little Alonge was abducted. Emmanuel was born 15 years after the couple got married.

Most of the broken homes you hear about in the entertainment industry is based on hearsay because most of the guys who fall in love with actresses see them and admire them, but the moment they take them home, their parents start revolting that they want to get married to an actress and honestly, the wife that has been kicked out some four years ago will now come back to say that one actress wants to steal her husband. It is something that one needs to take a very careful look at.”
