Nigerian Policemen Chase Okada Rider To His Death
The
deceased was crushed to death by a fast moving articulated vehicle at about
6pm, yesterday while trying to evade police arrest.
The
sad incident resulted in traffic gridlock and motorists were stranded for hours
as Okada riders in the vicinity went on the rampage to protest the death of
their colleague.
The
deceased, Shagari news gathered was said to be a tailor, who also rode the
motorcycle in the evening after close of work to make some money.
An
eyewitness told our correspondent that the deceased was trying to evade arrest
by the policemen who were on patrol in the area, apparently to enforce
restriction of okada on that particular road as specified by the Lagos Traffic
Law.
“He
was coming from Shasha end of the road en-route Akowonjo roundabout after close
of work as a tailor when he ran into the policemen on patrol. Before then, he
had only gone to make a U-turn from the same roundabout when he could not find
a passenger to carry.
“In
the process he ran into policemen and in an attempt to escape from the arrest
he fell under the tyre of the articulated vehicle which crushed him.
“Other
okada riders who were watching the development, immediately blocked the
road and went after the policemen on patrol.”
A
combined team of regular and anti-riot policemen restored normalcy after
shooting in the air to scare away the rampaging youths and okada riders.
The
Commander of “ Area M” command, Idimu, Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP,
Ibrahim Kaoje, who led the team of policemen to the scene, described the
incident as unfortunate.
He urged
the okoda riders and sympathisers on the need to maintain peace and order by
not obstructing other people from going about their lawful businesses.

Dandy Drops New Video..
Nigeria Born Daniel Onuigwe popularly known as Dandy, and imperially slim 6.2
inch tall with glowing fair skin, a producer and a song writer from Imo
state Okigwe L.G.A who grew up in western part of Nigeria Lagos. Being a
privileged child he is the 5th and the only son of his parent amongst 6
girls. It early afternoon and dandy is running late to record one of his
artist in his studio, he steps out of his car filled with apologies.
Frankly speaking, I wasn’t really paying attention to what he was saying
as I was totally blown away with his humility. So you wouldn’t really
blame me for standing there transfixed and sizing up the prince
charming. Most times celebrities find it really hard to define
themselves, in some cases they end up giving ambiguous answers when
questions about their personalities are asked. For Dandy the question of
defining himself founds vague but it successfully takes a different
route to answering the question about him. ”sometimes I wish we could
ban people from asking us to tell them about ourselves because
truthfully it is not the easiest question to answer.” He says” people
think that celebrities know themselves, but the truth is they don’t. So
I am just a regular person that others see in a glowing bus called the
T.V. I’m just a very simple person”. Why dandy? He has this to say “my
mum actually gave me the name Dandy because I care a lot about my looks
and appearance; I believe personal style is the reflection of who you
are on the inside. My personal style comes from inside so for me it’s an
expression of who I am. I always evolve and also like to be comfortable
with what I wear at the same time. Talking about the R&B music and
how it all started, Dandy said” I had always wanted to go into music,
music was my first love and it was singing, I knew all along that I am
going to end up here eventually, we all started way back when I was a
kid let say during my secondary school days and around my penultimate
year. I got exposed to hip-hop and R & B music, I realized that
hip-hop was of one of the things that made you look cool, and hence a
lot of us were drawn towards it. Even if it was against the school rules
to bring musical gadgets into school, I would sneak in my Walkman and
everyone will be talking about it. So it was all about being hip and
being a part of the “in” crowd. I use to make a lot of noisy sounds with
my desk at school. Later on I joined the RCCG teens church (Wisdom
Chapel) Cornerstone Modern Parish where we formed an accapella musical
group called “The Echoes of Wisdom”.
We came out with an album titled “Change My Night” but couldn’t go far because we broke out. With all the recent talk of tracks like (Kia-Kia) meaning sharp- sharp right? “yes! (Egeshilo & Dangerous game) the album is set to go multi-platinum and with his talents and personality it is clear that he is an humble artist who will outlive the hype. “This is my maiden album; I just completed it and just shot a video for Kia-Kia featuring O’cube, (Download link available-click blue link) the video was shot by Iyke man of Urban Touch. So what I am really focusing on is making sure that this Album is a success and that means having to promote the album is not enough to put out an album. I’ve got to keep shooting good videos, making new connections, meeting new people and most importantly winning fans over, he concluded.

Nasarawa State University, Keffi.... students and soldier fighting over water.
Students of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, this morning clashed with
soldiers after they protested over not having water for many days on
campus. Soldiers were called into the school to restore sanity but
things went crazy. They clashed with the students and I hear they may
have killed one of them.
The soldiers allegedly went to the off
campus hostels to harrass and beat up students. The school has been
closed down indefinitely as a result of this. The Governor of Nasarawa
state, Tanko Almakura, have since advised all students of the school to
leave the school premises with immidiate effect till further notice.

Revealed: How Then Governor Goodluck Jonathan Gave Obaigbena $1 Million From Bayelsa’s Poverty Alleviation Funds For Beyonce And Jay Z's Visit To Nigeria
![]() | |
| Beyonce and Governor |
SaharaReporters has uncovered a document indicating that a million dollars of Bayelsa State’s poverty alleviation fund was spent by then Governor Goodluck Jonathan on bringing American entertainers Beyonce and Jay Z to Nigeria in 2006.
In a letter stamped and signed by Bayelsa officials, N150 million (approximately a million dollars in 2006) was released from the state’s poverty alleviation fund for the first ThisDay Music Festival in Lagos.
The document came to light after a controversy was ignited over how much money American “reality TV” star Kim Kardashian was paid for a brief visit to Nigeria.
Ms. Kardashian, star of a US TV show about her idle rich family and who shot to international fame after a sex tape featuring her and her rapper boyfriend went viral, was reportedly paid half a million dollars for the 24-hour-visit last week.
The sources who provided the 2006 document for Beyonce and Jay Z’s visit told Saharareporters that there was a shady financial link between the producers of some high profile entertainment events and the governors and other officials who control budgets at the state and federal levels. Mr. Obaigbena’s newspaper, ThisDay, is a major sponsor of entertainment events that brings US music stars as well as top public figures for flying visits to Nigeria in exchange for gargantuan paychecks.
“Mr. Obaigbena often lines up financial bonanzas from numerous governors, ministers and other top government officials to finance his jamborees,” said one of the sources who is based in the UK and is knowledgeable about such deals.
SaharaReporters obtained a letter from Mr. Obaigbena to the Bayelsa State government soliciting funds from the oil-producing state ahead of Nigeria’s 46th independence celebrations in 2006. The publisher wrote, “We invite you to partner with us as co-hosts of the festival.” The letter added: “With a total budget of $10 million, the co-host is expected to contribute a minimum of $2.5 million (two million five hundred thousand USD).”
At the bottom of the letter, minuted by hand and signed by then Governor Jonathan’s aides as well as the Bayelsa State accountant general are the words, “Release N150,000,000.00 (One hundred and fifty million naira) only to be drawn from the poverty alleviation subhead.”
One source told SaharaReporters that Mr. Obaigbena sent similar letters to other south-south states.
SaharaReporters could not ascertain how much of the released funds was paid directly to performers at the festival. There is no indication that Beyonce, one of the few entertainment stars internationally famous enough to only need one name, was aware that her performance was being subsidized by the poor people of Bayelsa.
But during Beyonce’s celebrated rendition of the Nigerian national anthem, pictures of Bayelsa State were projected onto the wall of the Lagos concert venue.
According to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, 47% of Bayelsans live in poverty. The World Bank says that per capita gross domestic product in the Niger Delta is significantly below the country’s average. According to the state’s own 2005 development strategy, 80% of rural communities have no access to safe drinking water, a key indicator in judging poverty. In Yenagoa, the state capital and Bayelsa’s largest urban area, an estimated two out of every five residents do not have access to safe drinking water.
In 2005, as part of its UN-approved strategy to combat poverty, the state promised to make a fund of N100 million available as soft loans and micro-credit to Bayelsans. The allocated fund was N50 million less than Mr. Jonathan approved for Mr. Obaigbena’s music festival. That promise was made in the Bayelsa State Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy, published by the United Nations Development Program and signed by then Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha. A civil rights activist in Yenogoa told SaharaReporters that the state “has been a woeful failure in its poverty reduction program.”
The letter from Mr. Obaigbena to then-governor Goodluck Jonathan said the concert was necessary to show that the news from Nigeria was “not just…HIV/AIDS, conflicts, poverty, kidnapping, strife and riots.”
The publisher added: “This is the longest ever period of democracy in Nigeria, over seven years and counting! And a stable democracy means more investment and economic prosperity for all.”
The publisher went on to give reasons why the state government should contribute to the concert.
The stars’ performances would “tell the world, through music, that Nigeria’s time has come,” Mr. Obaigbena wrote. The letter added, “And once the good news catches on with the young and upwardly mobile, music loving new generation it will catch on with the world of investments and bountiful opportunities.”
In 2006, Mr. Goodluck Jonathan had just become governor of Bayelsa after his boss, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, was impeached and convicted on corruption charges. Mr. Jonathan was then elevated to Vice President to then President Umaru Yar’Adua. Mr. Yar’Adua's death in 2010 enabled Mr. Jonathan, a zoologist whose PhD focused on tropical fish, to assume the presidency.
Since 2006, Mr. Obaigbena’s parent company, Leaders & Company, has produced a number of high-profile events that have seen such American stars as Rihanna, R Kelly, and Usher perform for Nigerians. The ticket prices for these concerts are usually out of reach of the “average” Nigerian. The events feature tickets that cost many tens of thousands of naira, usually reserved for “VIP access.” ThisDay has also hosted political luminaries like former US President Bill Clinton and former economic adviser to the Obama presidency, Lawrence Summers. At an Africa Rising concert in London, former US Secretary of State Colin Powell came on stage and danced to the popular Naija jam “Yahooze” by Olu Maintain.

16 Russians Arraigned Over Arms Importation
Sixteen Russians were this afternoon arraigned at Federal High Court on four count of criminal charge of illegal importation of arms into Nigeria.
The suspects are: Zhelyazkov Andrey, 53, Savchenko Sergay, 36, Chichkanov Vasily, 49, Varigin Igor 48, Komilov Alexandr 32, Lopatin Alexey 38, Baranovskly Nikolay 50, Mishin Pavel 31, Lia Shubov 33, Dmitry Bannyrn 40, Alexander Tsarikov 44, Kononov Sergel, 44 Korotchenko Andrey 23, Vorobev Mikal 40, Stepan Oleksuik 52, and their ship (MV Myre Seadiver)
According to the third criminal charge filed by the court by Principal State Counsel from the Attorney General of Federation Office, Mr. E.A. Ezebilo, it was alleged that the sixteen Russians on or about 18 October, 2012 in Lagos within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court did without a license import into Nigeria a cache of firearms and ammunition prohibited for importation under section 18 of the firearms act.
The
captain of the ship, MV Myre Seadiver used for the importation of the
arms and ammunition was arraigned separately for unlawfully entering
Nigeria through Nigeria’a territorial waters without due clearance and
declaration of the goods carried on board of ship.
However, the prosecutor, Mr. Ezebilo, told the court he was served this morning, therefore, he needed two days to file his response. The presiding judge while acceding to the request of the prosecutor, adjourned till 25 February when the bail application will be heard. The Russian ship was seized on October 19 off the coast of Lagos by a naval patrol. Weapons found on the vessel included 14 AK-47 rifles with 3,643 rounds of ammunition as well as 22 Benelli MR1 rifles with 4,955 rounds of ammunition. The intended destination or planned use of the arms was not clear.
In December, Russia’s foreign ministry said it had reached a deal to secure the release of the sailors, explaining that Nigeria had agreed to drop the case to preserve cordial relations between the two nations. That pact, if it ever existed, appears to have been sidelined. The vessel was said to have left the Cook Islands in the South Pacific and arrived in Nigeria’s waters without permission. It reportedly belonged to the Moscow-based Moran Group and was flying a Dutch island flag at the time of its seizure.
Family of 7 kidnapped in Cameroon, near Nigeria
Ansaru group; another abduction?
Seven French tourists, members of the same family—three adults and four children, were kidnapped Tuesday by unidentified men in northern Cameroon, near the border with Nigeria, a source close to the French embassy in Yaounde said.
President Francois Hollande of France believed the Nigerian Ansaru terror group, the same group that kidnapped seven foreigners at a construction site, run by SETRACO in Jama’are, Bauchi state of Nigeria, was behind the latest abduction. “Seven French tourists were captured today by men, apparently on motorbikes, in the Cameroonian locality of Dadanga on the frontier with Nigeria,” the source said. “Clearly the tourists were returning from the Waza natural park.”
A security source in the area told AFP the kidnapping “involved three adults and four children,” adding that security forces were hunting for the kidnappers the length of the border with Nigeria.
An anonymous source in Waza park said the tourists went to visit the park yesterday. “They slept in the park’s tourist camp where they left this morning,” the source said. It’s the first time that Western tourists have been kidnapped in Cameroon, although hostage taking frequently occurs off the Cameroonian coast, the last incident dating back to February 8.
President Francois Hollande confirmed that seven French tourists from one family, including four children, were kidnapped Tuesday in northern Cameroon and said he suspected a Nigeria group was responsible.
“What is most probable is they were taken to Nigeria,” Hollande said, adding that they were seized by a Nigeria-based “terrorist group that we know well”.
TVC To Launch 24-Hour News Channel
On 28 February, Continental Broadcasting Services, CBS, will launch the first ever pan-African 24-hour news channel, TVC News.
The new channel, already test-transmitting, will be competing with international broadcasters for viewers, Nigel Parsons, Chief Executive Officer, TVC News, told P.M.NEWS during a facility tour of the station’s ultra-modern studio Tuesday.
“Part of the reasons for the coming of this channel is to bring a change to the coverage of death and disaster in Africa by many of this foreign channels. There are a lot of positive things happening on the continent and many good events to celebrate in Africa,” Parsons, who is a former managing director at Al Jazeera English, said.
TVC News will be based in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, with offices in Abuja and Port Harcourt.
The station will also have offices in Johannesburg, Nairobi, Accra and Dakar. The channel has secured agreements to air on Startimes in Nigeria, and British Sky Broadcasting Group Plc, BSkyB in the United Kingdom, while other countries will follow before April.
Parsons pointed out that the new channel projects that revenue will come from a mix of sponsorship and advertising, as well as being supported by CBS’s existing stations like TVC Entertainment channel, Radio Continental and Adaba FM.

Nigerian Pastor Arrested With Human Parts
The police in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, have arrested a pastor and his accomplice with fresh human parts. They allegedly concealed the human parts in two bags at the time they were arrested.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, on Monday confirmed the arrest of the pastor and his accomplice. Manko also told NAN that the suspects caught with human parts were arrested on Saturday and currently in detention at the State Criminal Investigations Department, SCID, Panti, Yaba, for further investigation.According to him, fingers, heart, liver, kidney and intestines were all concealed in two bags, which were discovered during a stop-and-search operation by policemen from Ikotun Police Divisional Office.
Manko disclosed further that two bottles filled with what was suspected to be human blood, were also recovered from the suspects.
However, the police boss did not disclose the identities of the suspects.
Manko also said the police have commenced investigation into the killing of an Asst. Supt. of Customs, who was allegedly shot dead by his colleague on duty post.

Colleagues Mourn Bombed Sand Dealer
The explosion occurred under the FESTAC/Mile 2 Link Bridge. A police inspector, Akin Sunday, was also seriously injured. Some of his colleagues while extolling his virtues said they are yet to come to terms with the reality that he is no more.
Peter Adeola, while commenting on the demise of Pius, said there is nobody that came across the late Ondo State-born businessman that had any cause to say negative things about him because he was generous to a fault.
Tayo Popoola, while speaking of the deceased nicknamed “Apase”, said it was really a painful exit because he had listening ears and was always ready to help. Oladele Pius “Apase died a painful death, those who carried out this act don’t know the implication of what they had done because he was a philanthropist,” Popoola said.
Another colleague of the deceased, who was very close to him cried uncontrollably.
He said: “it is possible that the late Pius was assassinated. They have killed him now, and I know those that killed him did so because he does not like people to be cheated, maybe he had running battles with some people and they decided to take his life.”
Sheu Adamu said words are not enough to describe his late boss. “I had nothing when I came to Lagos from Adamawa State. It was this man that housed and fed me. It was under this bridge that I saved money to rent an apartment and achieved other things in life. It is really a sad day for a number of us you see here today (Monday) because he was accommodating till he died.”
Meanwhile, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, who was at the explosion scene a few hours later, tried to play down the incident.
“The experts in that are already there. The impression there is not what all of you might be thinking, it is so minor. It is not the type that everybody is thinking about,” Mr. Manko said. “It is not the type of explosion that Nigerians are used to of recent. Just somebody trying to play games here and thereby using common battery put in a torchlight, that’s what we found there,” he added
